The Laboratory of Physical Geography (LPG) belongs to the Department of Geography & Climatology (DGC) of the Faculty of Geology & Geoenvironment. The Director of LPG is Prof. Serafim Poulos and its staff includes 9 teaching/research personnel, 2 teaching assistants, and 6 PhD candidates.
The research interests of the laboratory cover a wide variety within the framework of the air-sea-land interaction processes shaping the earth’s surface morphology (sub-aerial and sub-aqueous). Specifically, over the past decades the LPG scientists have been involved in research on river deltas, beach zones, river catchments, fluvial geomorphology, coastal indicators of relative sea level changes, coastline stability, climate change (past, present and future), coastal oceanography, sediment dynamics, remote sensing and GIS applications.
The LPG, has been hosted or involved in cooperation with DGC, as Coordinator or Partner, in more than 50 EU funded or co-funded research projects (e.g. MATER, CINCS, PDTD, HCM, Marie-Curie, INTERREG I-I & II, COST, PEOPLE, PYTHAGORAS I & II, HERAKLEITOS (2), THALIS, SYNERGASIA I & II). The total budget of the projects exceeds the 5 million EUROS for the past decade. In addition, regional studies have been conducted with local authorities and natural persons (e.g. identification of historical shorelines, fluvial floods, coastal erosion).
